Reducing High Cholesterol
Causes of high cholesterol may vary from person to person. It mostly depends on the lifestyle, gender of the individual that determines his cholesterol levels. We need to do certain things to maintain a healthy life and one of them is to maintain your cholesterol at the right level. Young, thin physically fit people can also have high cholesterol levels although chances of increase in cholesterol levels could happen due to certain factors. Americans weigh more today than in the last ten years. Having busy careers and children's heavy extra-curricular activities, we tend to eat something quick while on the move. Although it is convenient and can make your life much easier it can prove devastating in the long run. Excess weight generally increases the level of "bad" cholesterol in your body. The solution is to determine the ideal weigh for your age and then choose a sensible plan that makes you consume the kinds of food that help reduce your cholesterol levels.
Low Cholesterol Diet
Avoiding foods made from saturated fats - coming from animals - is an essential line of defense in fighting high cholesterol. Look for unsaturated or vegetable fats. Instead of heavy oils, use low fat cooking spray whenever possible.
Regular physical activity is an excellent way to lower cholesterol and keeps your body in the best functioning capacity. Exercise does not mean you have to run 10 miles a day and live in a gym six days a week. What it means, is that 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise, which includes brisk walking, done on a daily basis, gives you the needed boost for lowering cholesterol.
Age and Gender
Cholesterol levels begin increasing for both men and women as age goes up. Women generally have a lower level than men do between the age of 50 and 55. However, once a woman starts into menopause, the natural occurrence is that the cholesterol level starts to increase.
Cholesterol levels and heredity
The truth is that family genes play a big role in many aspects of a person's health to include the amount of cholesterol you might have to deal with. If you have a parent that has had to battle with high levels of cholesterol, your chances of following in their footsteps is high.
If you have a high level of cholesterol, do some research to find out if the other members of your family have this problem. Find out which medication they had success with, the same medication can be helpful to you. When you meet with your physician, take your family history along with any proven medications and/or therapies to your doctor to review them.
