Application to Dietary Supplements

Seminar Overview

The global nutraceutical market was estimated to be $140.1 billion US dollars in 2010. Concerns have arisen over the increasing cases of adulterated products in the market which threaten the health of the consumer and the continual growth for the nutraceutical industry.

US rulings such as the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the 2007 Good Manufacturing Practice of Dietary Rule and comparable rules from other countries have set guidelines to ensure product safety and manufacturing compliance.

Join Kim Colson, Ph.D. and Jimmy Yuk, Ph.D. as we demonstrate the use of Assure-RMS with modern NMR technology to provide quality control of dietary supplements for the detection of adulterants and determination of identity, purity, strength and composition.

What you will discover?

The modern day NMR spectrometer has evolved from one requiring a technical expert for the study of pure materials to an analytical technology that is accessible to the non-traditional NMR user, including biologists, geneticists, and medical staff, for the study of highly complex mixtures, such as natural health products and dietary supplements. By taking advantage of the high compound specificity, high reproducibility, and absolute quantitative nature of NMR, herbal products and dietary supplements can be evaluated for identity, purity, strength and composition often from a single experiment taking only 15 minutes or less.

Unknowns can be easily detected through an integral accounting approach and adulterants can be easily detected even if a reference standard is not available. Using a NMR spectrometer equipped with Assure-RMS software, dietary supplement producers and suppliers can customize the NMR spectrometer to perform fully automated analysis and reporting of their products to provide necessary testing results to ensure product consistency and quality within manufacturing specification.
